ECB

Started : 2011

Project Duration : 2 Years

Providing UX for the websites & apps of English Cricket.

The Challenge

The ECB is the national governing body for cricket here in England.

The organisation supports all areas of the sport and it’s development ; from grass roots to the international squad.

As part of Other Media, I led the UX work stream on a series of digital projects. These projects spanned a long-term relationship between the agency and the organisation. This was great for me, as I could work across all of the various ECB websites and apps.

The businesses’ main goals were to :

  • Engage cricket fans more effectively.
  • Provide better visualisations for scores and match data.
  • Grow revenue by encouraging ticket sales and memberships.
  • Grow the sport by encouraging grass-roots cricket.

The Solution

I worked with ECB over for over two years, enhancing their digital experiences. I designed websites and apps used by thousands of cricket fans for all kinds of cricket-related reasons.

My work included a redesign of the website and a new mobile app. I also continued to optimise and test these products on an ongoing basis.

What I did

I conducted research and profiled audiences

From getting the latest fixtures and scores to finding the nearest cricket club, the range of user needs was pretty vast.

I conducted user research both on the ground, and through analytics tools. This helped identify content priorities and hierarchies.

Audience profing and analytics helped us plan and prioritise user journeys.

I provided information architecture for the new website & mobile app

The number of features that ECB needed to offer cricket fans required some serious journey analysis. Well planned information architecture was crucial.

I produced sitemaps and information architecture across all ECB’s different channels. Making sure that IA was consistent between the website and apps was important to ensure a ‘joined-up’ experience.

I visualised the new experience with wireframes & prototypes

Designing rapidly and iteratively helped bring the new services to life super quickly.

UX deliverables like prototypes and wireframes helped us get user and client feedback earlier. These wireframes were then used to create technical specifications, helping to brief the development team more easily.

The Results

The work I did with Other Media really helped to modernise and refresh ECB’s digital experience. My input to the project helped promote a culture of user-centered design and data-led decision making.

The app continues to be available, and at the point of last checking had over a million downloads with a four-star average rating.
